There is a 6 step process for agents to get ready for MTD as outlined by HMRC in their own guide here.

1. Talk to your clients


HMRC advise that you find out which clients are elegible for MTD and make them aware of the changes.


2. Use Clear Books


Clear Books is fully compliant and will allow you to submit MTD VAT returns on behalf of your client.


3. Creating an Agent Services Account


An Agent Services Account is required to submit Making Tax Digital VAT returns. This does not replace existing credentials, or logins, which you will still use for all other existing online services, such as VATs online tax return service, as well as for those clients you do not sign up to Making Tax Digital services.


What you need


The Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) for your tax agent firm. 


You’ll also need:


The Government Gateway user ID and password you use to access HMRC online services for agents

The postcode associated with your UTR

Your money laundering supervisory body details, including:

Your supervisory body’s name

Your membership number

The date your membership expires

4. Copy across clients or authorise new ones for your agent services account

Copy existing clients across


Your existing clients will already be authorised in your HMRC online services for agents account. You do not need to set up new authorisations.

To copy existing clients across to your agent services account:

  1. Sign in using the Government Gateway user ID and password you got when you created your agent services account.
  2. Select ‘Copy across your existing Self Assessment and VAT clients to this account’.
  3. Enter the Government Gateway user ID and password you use to access HMRC online services for agents and follow the steps.

Your clients will be authorised on both of your accounts.

Authorise new clients


To authorise new clients on your agent services account:

  1. Check what information you need.
  2. Sign in using the Government Gateway user ID and password you got when you registered for an agent services account.
  3. Select ‘ask a client to authorise you’.
  4. Enter your clients’ information.


5. Sign your clients up for Making Tax Digital


Sign clients up for Making Tax Digital for VAT at least 72 hours before their VAT Return is due, or 7 working days before if they pay by Direct Debit. 


6. Authorise Clear Books


This is the only part of the process that you need to do in Clear Books. You can do this in step 5 of the onboarding wizard.


Once you have authorised Clear Books as the software for one client, all your clients, with MTD enabled, will also be authorised.
